About our career test and study-choice test

Everything you want to know before you start: what the test measures, how the RIASEC model works, and what you can do with it.

What is a career test?

A career test maps out which professions fit your personality, interests and motivations. Our test uses 300 statements that calculate your RIASEC profile and match it with more than 1,700 professions from our database. You don't just get a list, but for each profession also the education, salary, typical day-to-day work and a match score.

What is a study-choice test?

The study-choice test translates your profile into concrete programs at the vocational/associate, applied bachelor's and university levels. You see which programs suit you and which professions they lead to, so you don't choose a program that ultimately doesn't lead to the work you want. The Study-Choice Explorer helps with the tough calls.

How does the RIASEC model work?

RIASEC distinguishes six personality types: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising and Conventional. Every profession has a dominant type and often two subtypes. We calculate your three-letter RIASEC code and compare it with the code of each profession; the greater the overlap, the higher the match.

Profession and salary: what do you earn?

Salary varies widely by education level, industry and experience. Broadly, vocational/associate-level professions start around $2,300 gross per month, applied bachelor's-level professions around $3,200 and university-level professions around $3,500. For freelancers, hourly rates range from $40 (entry level) to well above $150 (specialized). On every profession page you'll see an indicative range.

Who is it for?

High school students choosing a track or program, students who are unsure about their direction, people entering the job market and professionals considering a career switch. Parents also use our test together with their child to get the conversation about study and career choices going; see the parents page for a step-by-step guide.

Frequently asked questions

Everything about the test, cost, reliability and salary.

What is a career test?

A career test maps out which professions align with your personality, interests and motivations. On CareerTestPro.com you do that through 300 statements that calculate your RIASEC profile, a scientific model that links professions to six personality types. You get a ranking of more than 1,700 professions, a profile page per profession with education, salary and day-to-day work, plus advice from an AI career coach.

What is the difference between a career test and a study-choice test?

A career test focuses on which work suits you; a study-choice test on which program logically leads there. Our test does both. After the test you see not only career matches, but also the programs (vocational/associate, applied bachelor's, university) that best fit your profile and the professions they lead to. That way you avoid choosing a program that doesn't lead to the work you really want.

How does the RIASEC model work?

RIASEC stands for six personality types: Realistic (R), Investigative (I), Artistic (A), Social (S), Enterprising (E) and Conventional (C). Every profession has a dominant type and often a subtype. By measuring your preference for hundreds of activities, we calculate your three-letter RIASEC code and compare it with the code of every profession. The greater the overlap, the better the match.

Is the test really free?

The first 20 questions are completely free and give you a first impression of your profile. Only if you want to continue to the complete profile with 300 questions, in-depth modules, career matching, an AI career coach and a PDF report do you pay a one-time $29. There is no subscription and no credit card needed to get started.

How reliable are the results?

The test is based on the RIASEC model (developed by John Holland, validated by decades of research), supplemented with in-depth modules on work style, values and industry interest. 300 statements produce a statistically solid personality profile. The AI coach adds context based on your specific answers. The result is a starting point for career decisions, not a final verdict.

Who is this test for?

For high school students choosing a program, vocational, applied bachelor's and university students who are unsure about their direction, young adults taking their first career step, and professionals who want to switch. Parents use it together with their child to open up the conversation about education and career choices.

How much do people earn on average in different professions?

Salary varies widely by education level, industry and experience. Roughly: vocational/associate-level professions start around $2,300 gross per month and rise to $3,400; applied bachelor's-level professions between $3,200 and $5,200; university-level professions between $3,500 and $5,500. For freelancers, hourly rates range from about $40 (entry level) to well above $150 (specialized professions). On every profession page you'll see an indicative range.

How long does the test take?

The free start (20 questions) takes about 3-5 minutes. The full test (300 questions) takes roughly 20-25 minutes and you can finish it across multiple sessions; your progress is saved automatically. In-depth modules are each 3-5 minutes extra.
