Student Financial Aid: First Steps and Frequently Asked Questions
Arranging student financial aid is important when you are about to start your studies. In this article, you'll find the first steps and frequently asked questions.
What is student financial aid?
Student financial aid consists of a basic grant (sometimes a gift, sometimes a loan), possibly an additional grant, and a student loan. Since 2023, there is again a basic grant available. The rules change; always check the current information on the financial aid office's website.
First Steps
1. **DigiD** — Make sure you have a DigiD. You need this to apply.
2. **Apply** — Do this as soon as possible after your enrollment. The sooner, the better.
3. **Income Information** — For the additional grant, you will need your parents' income information. Request this in time.
Basic Grant vs. Loan
The basic grant is a monthly allowance. Under certain conditions, it can later be converted into a gift. Additionally, you can take out a loan. A loan must be repaid. Only borrow what you need.

Frequently Asked Questions
When should I apply for student financial aid?
As soon as possible after enrolling in a program. You cannot reverse it; if you are late, you will miss out on months of aid. Arrange it in the summer before you start in September.
What if I fall behind?
If you fall behind, your student financial aid may continue for a longer period, but there are limits. Inquire with the financial aid office about what applies to your situation. Sometimes there are exceptions in special circumstances.
