What is the RIASEC Method and How Does It Help You Choose a Career?
What is RIASEC?
The RIASEC method, also known as the Holland Code or Holland Theory, is a scientific model developed by American psychologist John L. Holland in the 1960s. The model suggests that people and work environments can be categorized into six broad types.
The Six RIASEC Types
**R — Realistic**
Realistic individuals enjoy practical, hands-on work. They like working with tools, machines, or outdoors in nature. Typical careers: mechanic, engineer, carpenter, pilot.
**I — Investigative**
Investigative individuals are analytical and intellectually curious. They enjoy solving complex problems and prefer to work independently. Typical careers: scientist, doctor, programmer, analyst.
**A — Artistic**
Artistic individuals are creative and expressive. They value freedom and originality in their work. Typical careers: graphic designer, writer, musician, architect.
**S — Social**
Social individuals are empathetic and communicative. They enjoy helping others and prefer to work in teams. Typical careers: teacher, nurse, social worker, career coach.
**E — Enterprising**
Enterprising individuals are ambitious and persuasive. They enjoy leading projects and have a commercial mindset. Typical careers: manager, entrepreneur, salesperson, lawyer.
**C — Conventional**
Conventional individuals are structured and precise. They appreciate clear rules and procedures. Typical careers: accountant, administrator, data analyst, logistics coordinator.
How to Use RIASEC for Your Career Choice?
The strength of RIASEC lies in the combination of types. Most people score high in two or three categories. This combination — your Holland Code — provides a much more accurate picture of which careers suit you than a single type.
A person with the code **SAE** (Social-Artistic-Enterprising) is well-suited for careers such as marketing manager, creative director, or communications advisor.
